Light The Night 2016

It’s that time of year again where I frantically start my last minute fund raising for our annual Light the Night walk where we raise funds to help the fight against blood cancers in honor of Cutler’s successful battle against leukemia and in memory of my dear Grandmother Fricke who battled lymphoma.  No donation is too small and any sharing of our effort is greatly appreciated as we continue to push for the cause so that no one will have to go through what Cutler did when he was only 6 months old.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Our honored hero, Cutler now 7 years old and almost 7 years cancer free!

Challenge Accepted – Mason

Here is Mason’s go after being challenged by his BFF, Ryan Delapaz.  He challenges McKinley Oliver, Natalie Gillum, Taylor Carley, and Jackson Flaherty.  Remember, it’s not just about the cooling off, it’s also about heating up the fight against ALS with a donation.  We donated in memory of Melanie’s Aunt Alma.  Join The Fight Against ALS

Challenge Accepted

I was first challenged to the ALS Ice Bucket challenge by my good buddy Johnny Lombardi in Boston a couple weeks ago and after continually forgetting to complete it I was then challenged by my second favorite sister, Angie.  This evening I finally found the time, with the help of Mason and a couple of his teammates.  My challenge goes to Ed Kless, Kim Gregory, and Brenda Grobler all the way over in Afghanistan.  Don’t forget to donate… Help Fight ALS

Mason is excited to complete his tomorrow.

Back On The Small Screen

It’s been awhile, but Cutler and I got the call to head back to TV land and use his cute looks and charm to help spread the word of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  This time we filmed a show, “Plugged In To DFW”, that will air locally on CBS at 6:30 am on Saturday morning.  The entire 30 minutes will be dedicated to the LLS and their current effort to help end AML called “Fight AML”.  As a reminder, this is what Cutler had at 6 months old, which is extremely rare for infants.  AML has a high frequency for coming back and so it is even more difficult to combat.  We have been very blessed to have a miracle fighter for a child.  Unfortunately others aren’t as fortunate and so I am honored to help the LLS spread the word any chance we get and this time the host was awesome enough to discuss with Cutler and get some good responses from him(good for a freshly turned five year old that is).  For those local to the Dallas area, I would encourage you to record and watch or just wake up early and watch and to help spread the word.  There was some very good information discussed about the LLS and AML in general.  CBS is going to send me a copy of the show next week, when I get it I will be sure to share.  A special thanks to our good friend Jennifer Flaherty for helping getting the LLS this opportunity at her awesome station.

Links Fore Leukemia 2014

This past Monday was my second annual LLS golf tournament to attend, with Cutler being the honored hero again.  With Melanie out of town, I brought Cutler as the honored hero and made the decision to bring along Mason as well so he could take in some of his brother’s glory.  After a couple of holes I thought that I might end up regretting this greatly.  It started with Cutler popping Mason in the nose and mouth with his careless golf swing leading to a bloody nose and many tears.  Next I quickly learned that I should have taught Cutler that when he drives and I tell him to stop he needs to take his foot off of the gas pedal as Mason is thrown a good distance from the cart.  Finally things settle down and the boys are playing together quite well and having a good time until Mason forgets that at 8 years old he is much stronger than the five year old Cutler as he unleashes a vicious slap to Cutler’s face.  If not for my three friends in our foursome keeping me a bit reserved, the two boys may have soon found the difference in strength between a 42 year old and their rear end.  Fortunately they were kind of enough to settle down for the last couple of holes and then proved to be great entertainment at the luncheon following the round.

At the luncheon the boys quickly proved how congenial they are as Cutler patrolled the dining area pointing out to all of the players that he was the one on the literature and asking if they remembered him from last year.  Then the MC for the event, a local sports radio morning host, George Dunham, made the mistake of taking a seat at our table.  It’s the first time I had met him and he was an incredibly nice guy.  He spent quite a bit of time talking to both of the boys and had quite the lengthy and entertaining time with them.  Mason now is very excited to listen to the morning show rather than asking for music as he asks which voice is George’s.

Not to be outdone by George, there were four Dallas Stars playing who quickly gathered the boys’ attention.  I am continually amazed at how down to earth hockey players are taking their time to pose with every person that approaches them but to also go out of their way to come say hi to the boys and even invite us down to the locker room before a game next season.  I still wonder at what age will the boys figure out how spoiled their sports experiences are to the average child.

Finally, on our way out, we were approached by a young college student who we had met at the tournament last year.  His father was one of the founders of the tournament, who passed away to Leukemia several years ago.  Last year he took a picture with Cutler and this year he came up to tell me that he is studying to become a pediatric oncologist and that Cutler was his inspiration after meeting him last year.  He pulled out his phone and showed me that his picture with Cutler was his wallpaper.  It gets me in my heart when I think what a difference Cutler can make by just being himself after going through his battle.  I am proud of the impact Cutler’s story has on people and it is a reminder of why we share our story as often as we can with others.  It also reminds me that sometimes it is worth having the boys drive me near insanity just to enjoy these special times together.

Links Fore Leukemia!

I have often considered putting together a golf tournament in an effort to raise funds for our annual Light The Night effort, but then I discovered the Links Fore Leukemia tournament put on by the LLS annually.  Last year Cutler was the honored hero and it was my first time playing in it.  I shared a video put together by the Stars and their connection with the tournaments honorary chairman, Vernon Fiddler.  This year we are back for our second round of love and attention.  As part of our involvement a journalist student from the University of North Texas came by for an interview and put together this article on Cutler.

I already have my awesome foursome together, however if there is anyone looking for a great tournament where all funds go to a great cause, please consider joining us on 5/12.  For more information please visit the link below or just reach out to me.  I’m also on the advisory board and we are still looking for sponsorships and/or items for the silent auction.

Perspective

While I was watching tv tonight Cutler came into the room and asked what I was watching.  When I told him it was Survivor, without pause he looked at me and said “I’m a survivor”.  No matter how many times I hear him say that, it reminds me how blessed we are and it is good to be reminded.

On that note, I wanted to share this story from abc news in regards to some amazing progress being made in the battle.

Light The Night 2013

On 10/26 we finally got to light the night and we quickly found competition in that effort with mother nature.  The weather was perfect for a bit, but just a minute into the walk the skies opened in full force.  Fortunately for us we had not started to walk yet and so we were able to get everything together and head to the garage as quickly as we could.  Unfortunately we still got drenched and weren’t able to get a full team picture.  So the plethora of pictures in the slide show below will have to do for this year.  We did get a special shout out for our Boo Cancer tshirts that we had made up during the initial presentations where we got on stage and told a quick version of Cutler’s story.  A special thank you to everyone that helped get ready, raise funds, and made donations to our team effort.  To date, we have managed to raise $8,209 and that doesn’t include the matching donations by some companies putting us at number 3 for individual teams in the North Cities area.  It’s by far more than I anticipated and I can’t thank everyone enough.  You’re all now off the hook for at least another few months before I start the next campaign for LTN 2014.

Another Successful Lemonade Stand

001 (683x1024)

I realize this post is long overdue, but I wanted to thank everyone for another successful lemonade stand.  We raised over $1700 on the 19th at our annual stand.  This year our entire tball team worked together to build an amazing stand as seen in the picture above.  We saw an increase just over $200 from last year, which is pretty impressive given the late start we put into this year’s.  All in all it was a great day/evening to hang out with friends and family and to watch the kids go crazy as usual hopped up on sugar.  We are already looking forward to next year and making plans to get a better head start to improve and go over $2000.

Thanks to everyone who helped in this effort, especially the Carleys.  We couldn’t have done it without you!
