A Proud Brother

On Saturday we took the boys to get their hair cut and while getting his cut, Mason was asked what he was doing for Thanksgiving. After telling the stylist that he was going to San Diego she asked if he had family there which gave him the opportunity to explain that we were being sent by Make A Wish because his brother was a leukemia survivor. I sat and listened as he explained that Make A Wish makes wishes come true for kids with cancer like his brother. It was definitely one off proudest moments listening to how mature he was with his explanation and how proud he was of his younger brother for being such a fighter. I often forget how Cutler’s battle impacted Mason and it is moments like this that remind me of how strong he was as well during the time.

Wish Granted

The wonderful people at Make A Wish have granted a wish for Cutler to visit Legoland.  We were originally contacted and met with them in April where we spent a wonderful day at their facility and Cutler spent time with our awesome wish granters, Leslie and Lindsey.  Two Saturdays ago we went back to the office where a new group of granters going through training were kind enough to help Leslie and Lindsey greet Cutler with signs showing him that his wish was granted.  He was showered with love, affection, gifts and his favorite lunch of chik-fil-a chicken nuggets.  One of the gifts they included was a chik-fil-a cow almost as tall as Cutler and this quickly took his attention away from everything else.  Everyday Cutler asks us what day it is in anticipation of Friday so he can be prepared for show and tell.  That has since been replaced with him asking me what day it is and then followed with is it time to fly to San Diego.  We received the full itinerary today, along with some more presents for Cutler (he’s not spoiled at all) and the excitement is building.  We will be going to Legoland, the famous San Diego Zoo, Sea World, the Children’s Museum and searching for a good Thanksgiving meal.  🙂  I will try to document each day at the end of the day so it doesn’t wait a year for me to get it all posted once we return to the normal rat race.  Below are a couple pictures of our visit two Saturdays ago.  Only six days to go and we are very excited!

Who Needs The NHL?

It’s very disheartening watching the NHL lose all of the momentum they had gained over the past couple of years over money.  It took me over seven years to get back into the NHL after the last strike and now they are at it again.  Fortunately, thanks to Mason, I realized I don’t need the NHL when I can go to the rink every Sunday and watch Mason in action.  He has played three games so far, for the Oilers, and has played goalie twice.  For never playing goalie before he has done pretty well.  Fortunately we had money saved up for college so we can afford to get him the pads and lessons as he seems to want to keep playing goalie.  Below are a lot of photos from his first two games…he is number 7.

The Next Charles Shultz

Yesterday when I picked up Mason from school he told me not to look at his drawings because “I might find them inappropriate”.  As we were in a hurry I didn’t think much about it, but a couple of hours later I pulled them out of his backpack and checked them out already forgetting what he had said.  Below is his drawing of Mario and Luigi trying to rescue Princess and Peach from an evil pumpkin.

While looking at it a bit closer I realized what he thought might be appropriate.  He decided to make Princess anatomically correct…on the outside.

I guess my little boy is growing up.

The Next John Riggins

Mason scored his first touchdown yesterday by showing Riggins like speed and determination to get into the end zone.  I realize that may be a bit dated of a reference, but he was my favorite running back growing up.

He has also shown some promise as a pass catching tight end, perhaps more suitable to his speed, or lack thereof.

Murphy Child’s Lemonade Helps Fight Cancer « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth.

Here is a follow up video from Friday night.  CBS came out to the house to get footage from the actual stand and once again they did a great job.  Even if the nice anchor woman had a bit of trouble with our last name at the begining.  🙂

I am proud to say it was a huge success as we raised about $1500.  Another huge jump from last year.  I will try to post a picture or two from someone else’s camera soon…in all of the celebrity, I forgot to get my camera.

Basketball Jones

Last night Mason scored his first basket of the season in his last game of the season.  In fact, due to his typical unselfish play (see lack of aggressiveness) this may have been his only shot of the season so his FG% is out of this world.  I did happen to bring along the camera for this game and was snapping photos almost non stop.  Good news and bad news occurred during this portion of Mason’s dominance.  Good news is that I took the camera down in time for me to see him make the shot, bad news is that I took the camera down without snapping a shot of making his first basket.

The whole play started with him stealing the ball and then dribbling up court, passing it to a teammate at the top of the key and then heading down low for the return pass at which time he drained the swish from an impressive 5 feet away.  🙂  Below are a couple of photos from the game including the HUGE smile on his face after he ran to the other end to play defense (see look for me to make sure I saw it).  I have to say that I was looking at the stands afterwards ready to yell “that’s my boy!”  I am one very proud father.

A Young Boy’s Dream

In Mason’s continued love of baseball we have set a goal to attend a baseball game at each of the 30 MLB stadiums by the time he turns 30 years old.  This past Monday Mason and I took the first step in this effort as we traveled to Houston for an Astros game against the Nationals and I don’t know if I have ever enjoyed a game as much as I did this one.  The excitement and joy that Mason showed was incredible and this trip proved to be a great father/son trip that I will not soon forget.  Below are some of the pictures from our trip.

Checked into the hotel and taking the 28 floor climb in the elevator

Kicking back and enjoying the hotel shuttle ride to the game with his complimentary water…He was very fired up about riding in the shuttle

Arrived and ready to enter the Juice

Note the Astros gear, another portion of his dream is to get a jersey from each ballpark. Still learning the loyalty to one team trick.

Starting the game of musical seats with a stop in left center field.

While enjoying centerfield we ran into this overly enthusiastic fan with a glove. Was pounding away at his glove talking to the players and stretching in anticipation of the next ball hit to him…which never occurred. Quite certain he may have passed the age limit for bringing a glove, but I guess you are only as old as you think you are.

With the Astros down in the 8th I got to introduce Mason to the rally hat

In our fifth and final seats for the game, the rally hat worked, temporarily, as the Astros went on to lose in extra innings.

Truth be told, this could have been titled a Daddy’s dream as well.

What’s Missing?

On Thursday night about 15 minutes after we had put the boys to bed Mason came running downstairs full of excitement that he finally had a lost tooth.  Over the next couple days he worked the tooth almost nonstop and Saturday night while spending the night at Grammy and Bumpa’s.  He is quite proud and pleased that he has now joined the majority of his friends in the world of missing teeth.
